Spinal Decompression Therapy
Neck or Lower Back Disc Bulge…
If you’ve ever expereinced a disc injury you understand how chronic pain is frustrating and exhausting. Profound back pain, pain radiating into your arm or legs, can’t stand, sit or lay down – a disc bulge is often the most painful event a person will expereince in life. It can keep you from living the life you desire, hinder your social and family life. If your life revolves around your pain, you are not alone, and we are here to help. Chronic back or limb pain caused by bulging, herniated, or degenerative discs can be greatly helped by Spinal Decompression Therapy. Many find the procedure comfortable and relaxing and greatly look forward to their treatments…and cancelling their surgery!
How does Spinal Decompression Therapy Work?
Nonsurgical spinal decompression is a specific mechanically assisted traction of the spine utilizing a table designed to facilitate the procedure. Spinal decompression works in the cervical and lumbar spine by gently tractioning (separating vertebra apart from each other). This separation of the spine can create a negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated disks can retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This helps promote movement of the spinal joints, blood flow to the surrounding tissues, and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs to promote healing.
Sessions are regular frequency, 2-3 sessions per week and increasing in distraction traction forces as a patient progresses in his or her sessions over time. Typical protocols for both cervical and lumbar disc issues start at 12 sessions and may progress to 24 or 36. This may seem intense, but at times decompression therapy is a final treatment option before considering surgery, thus a serious commitment is sometimes required.
During decompression sessions, you should be clothed comfortably as you will spend up to 20 minutes per session on the decompression table.
Decompression therapy may be the only treatment received for your condition, or it may be coupled with chiropractic care, massage therapy, laser treatments or other healing therapies.
